Lawndale

The Scene at Douglas Park
In addition to the standard park facilities, this area boasts a decent fishing spot, indoor and outdoor music performances, and loads of classes and activities for all ages. The fieldhouse, built in 1890, has a veranda that overlooks a small lake. Every summer, sand is distributed around the lake's perimeter to create a beach. During warm weather, this site hosts musical concerts ranging from gospel to blues. The Ravinia Festival Lawndale Partnership is working to bring additional concerts to the park as well as exhibits, lectures and music lessons. Other music-related activities include violin classes, instrument making, a music and entertainment training institute and a chorus. Inside, a renovated auditorium has a permanent stage and theatrical lighting, which serves the youth drama classes and the adult theater workshop.

The Activities
In addition to an after-school program and summer day camp, children can participate outdoor sports, ceramics, gymnastics, jump rope, music bingo, volleyball and floor hockey. For teenagers, the offerings include Teen Club, cheerleading, painting, dance and wrestling. Adults can learn to paint, take a Jazzercise class, or use weight room facilities. Fees are small.
